In the past 2.5 years, Noah has accumulated quite the library. For Noah’s nursery, we used Ikea spice racks to house his books, but I wanted something different for his big boy room. The storage solution had to meet 2 requirements: 1) book wrangler and 2) coordinate with the room’s vintage sports theme.
We bought four of these unfinished wooden crates from Michael’s. Our original plan was to secure them together and build a makeshift bookcase. The bookshelf would go on the same wall Noah’s headboard backed up to.
Once they were sliced and diced, I stained them the same color as the headboard, Miniwax Special Walnut.
We went back and forth for days about which wall to hang the shelves on, what height, and how many per wall. We decided to place them on opposing sides of his toy chest. Noah has a history of pulling down book shelves so a secure mounting was essential. Taylor secured a piece of wood to a stud in the wall first and then drilled the sides of the half crate into the piece of wood. After the first 2 were up, we thought it would be best to wait on mounting the remaining two until everything else was hung in the room.
The character of the crates holds true to the room’s theme and they are the perfect height for Noah to get his books in and out with ease. For $7.80 ($13 crates with 40% coupon), these book shelves are a win!
